A cum laude graduate of Michigan State University College of Law ( JD 1994) and member (inactive) of the Illinois State Bar Kurt Bergmanis was called to the Law Society of Upper Canada in 1998. He is a senior partner and co founder of Bergmanis Preyra LLP. Following his call to the bar he has practiced exclusively in the area of personal injury law and has a lengthy track record of achieving justice for injured accident victims. He has conducted both jury and non jury trials and is a member of the Ontario Trial Lawyers Association and the Advocates Society. In September 2014 he would represent the family of Wieslaw Duda at the Coroner's Inquest into his death following one of the city's most publicized police shootings.
His areas of expertise include motor vehicle law, insurance law including accident benefits with an emphasis on catastrophic injury and fatality claims.
He is often consulted by fellow lawyers, and has acted as counsel to other personal injury firms in more serious cases. He represents accident victims from all walks of life regularly acting for pedestrians, motorcyclists and cyclists.
He does not represent insurance companies.
He founded the Bergmanis Preyra Community Safe Streets Program, an initiative to put helmets on kids and to promote rider safety. He is a longtime supporter of Cardiac Kids ( Sick Kids Foundation) and recently partnered with FeedtheFrontlines Toronto to serve meals to our frontline health workers during the Covid crisis.
In his spare time he enjoys coaching and playing hockey and is an avid cyclist.
